Roth IRA vs. Traditional IRA: Which One Is Best for You?

The Fundamental Distinction: When Do You Pay Taxes?

Choosing between a Roth IRA and a Traditional IRA boils down to a single question:

Do you expect your effective income tax rate to be higher today, or higher when you retire?

Roth IRA Advantages

  1. Tax-Free Growth & Withdrawals: Every dollar of gain, dividend, and capital appreciation is 100% tax-free at retirement.
  2. No Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): You are never forced by the IRS to take money out at age 73 or 75. You can let the balance grow untouched for your entire lifetime.
  3. Penalty-Free Principal Access: You can withdraw your regular direct contributions at any time, for any reason, with zero taxes and zero penalties.

Traditional IRA Advantages

  1. Immediate Upfront Tax Deduction: Contributions may reduce your current taxable income for the year you make them.
  2. Lower Tax Bracket at Retirement: If you are in your peak earning years today (e.g. 32% or 35% bracket) and expect to live modestly in retirement (e.g. 12% or 22% bracket), taking the upfront tax break can produce higher net wealth.
